O2 is switching off 3G: Here’s what it means for SIMcredible customers

At SIMcredible, we like to keep things simple. No jargon, no fuss - just clear updates that help you stay connected. So here’s a quick but important heads-up about changes happening across the UK mobile world.

O2 is switching off 3G: Here’s what it means for SIMcredible customers

O2 has started shutting down its 3G network

O2 has begun turning off its 3G network in several areas across the country. Places like Durham, Norwich, Telford, Guildford, Torquay, and Watford have already switched. Next up is Scotland, with the full nationwide shutdown expected to be completed by December 2025.

This isn’t just O2. Networks across the UK and globally are retiring older technologies so they can focus on delivering faster, more reliable 4G and 5G services. That means better connectivity, smoother streaming, and more energy-efficient networks for everyone.

What this means for SIMcredible users

Most customers won’t notice any changes, especially if you’re already using a 4G or 5G-ready phone. But if you are still using a device that only supports 3G, you may experience:

  • Reduced call quality
  • No access to mobile data or the internet
  • Apps needing data (like WhatsApp) not working properly

To stay connected, you will need to upgrade to a device that supports 4G Calling (VoLTE)

What should you do next?

If you’re unsure whether your device supports 4G, 5G, or 4G Calling (VoLTE), now is a great time to check. Upgrading your device doesn’t need to be costly - many affordable devices work well with modern networks.

And the good news? Every SIMcredible plan is already designed to work smoothly with 4G and 5G, so once you’re on a compatible device, you’re good to go!

Quick check: Is your phone 4G/5G ready?

Look at your settings:

  • iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Voice & Data → see LTE/5G
  • Android: Settings → Mobile Networks → Network Mode → see 4G/5G

Check for VoLTE/4G Calling:

  • If your phone lists VoLTE or 4G Calling, you’re good for 4G calls.

Check your model online:

  • Search “[phone model] specs” to confirm 4G/5G support.

Test it:

  • Make a call or use data in a 4G area. If it works, you’re connected!
